Fútnotes
Fútnotes
A soccer cheat sheet
Project Overview
I was tasked with consulting on a small startups soccer trivia app. It became apparent that a lot of the staff didn't know much about soccer. I jokingly suggested that an app for learning soccer may be more beneficial. A few days later I was tasked with developing, Fútnotes.
Elevator pitch…
If you're not a sports enthusiast but have a bunch of friends that are, it may be hard for you to keep up with the conversation. With all of the soccer jargon being thrown around and the inside jokes... a novice soccer fan can become overwhelmed quickly! Fútnotes is a tool to help novice soccer fans learn more about the game, and engage with the sport in a fun and contextual way.
My Contributions
Full UX process from research to final high fidelity designs.
Finding the people
that need this app…
Screener Survey
My team sent out a screener survey to attract the users that would need this app. Who are those people? Individuals that...
watched less than 5 soccer matches in the last 6 months
have friends or family members that are avid soccer fans
didn't know who Cristiano Ronaldo was or knew him only outside of soccer
thought they would enjoy watching soccer if they had a clearer understanding of the rules
enjoy other sports and sports gatherings
By interviewing people that qualified, we were able to gain insights that will help us later on in the design phase...
Key Questions That Drove Insightful Research
Why do you want to be a part of the soccer community if you don't enjoy the sport itself?
Our users are more interested in the social events that surround the matches.
How do you learn about soccer currently?
The majority of users interviewed learn about soccer by listening in on their friend's conversations. Those users didn't feel as though that was enough.
What do you dislike the most about your lack of soccer knowledge?
Users hated to bother their friends with questions during a match. They find it embarrassing and their friends tend to be impatient.
User Insights…
Our users do not watch sports alone and tend to learn about soccer through small talk.
Users have a self-described “basic” comprehension of soccer.
Users appreciate the passion of fans. They enjoy being part of the excitement but fail to understand what everyone is excited about.
Our users are more interested in the social events and traditions surrounding sports than the games themselves.
Users find the game-play of soccer abstract and constantly need explanations from fellow watchers.
They find people often get impatient when asked to explain sports to them.
Users find the game-play of soccer abstract and confusing. Fútnotes will provide users with contextual information for all aspects of soccer; therefore alleviating any confusion that may occur due to their lack of soccer knowledge.
"To me, soccer just looks like a bunch of guys kicking a ball back and forth and hoping for the best"
It's my pleasure to introduce, Jake. (Not from State Farm)
With these insights, my team was able to create a persona that would help us arrive at design solutions that better address the needs and concerns of all the users interviewed.
If we can curate Fútnotes to help Jake learn the rules of soccer in a fun and engaging way, we can help him connect with his friends. He'll be able to stay engaged during soccer gatherings as he'll know what's going on. By making Fútnotes perfect for Jake, we can successfully create an app for the people that need this product.
Now that we know Jake, let's take what we know & help him out...
Problem Statement
Jake, a novice soccer fan, likes going to the social gatherings his friends plan surrounding soccer, but he doesn’t fully comprehend the sport and feels like he cannot fully engage with his friends during matches.
How might we help Jake better enjoy his time when he joins his friends to watch a soccer match?
UI Design
Giving the people what they want!
What Fútnotes provides...
We designed an app that can be used during matches to follow the action play-by-play with links to interactive content.
The app can also be used as a learning tool in one’s spare time with educational references full of delightful and concise multimedia.
Home Page Iterations
We didn't want to overwhelm Jake, so we only gave him what he wanted.
This home screen was replaced by the play-by-play screen. Users weren't interested in taking quizzes to build their soccer knowledge. Rather, they preferred to learn through the guidance of the Live play-by-play feature.
This icon was replaced by the horn. Users better associated the horn with notification as opposed to the profile icon.
After the initial home screen was scrapped, we provided a Quick Reference button. Upon, further research we found that the button should be in the bottom navigation.
Opening screen and Hi-Fi home page.
Live Play-By-Play Iterations
Teaching through guidance and support.
This page was scrapped after it's contents became the new home screen.
Users liked the information provided but also wanted to see snack-size videos for visual explanations.
Quick Reference Iterations
Soccer tutor in your pocket.
Although items were alphabetized and grouped, users found this format overwhelming and not delightful to look at. In our Hi-Fi mockup, categories are represented using iconography.
Moving away from the quiz aspect, in our Hi-Fi mockup, we immediately provide users with answers.
Next Steps…
Further testing of Hi-Fi based on the most recent version.
Conduct more user interviews to develop a secondary persona. The assumption is that avid soccer fans might appreciate this app when they cannot watch a match live.
